In the preamble to the protests this Wednesday, the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, He said the pro-Palestinian protests on Ivy League campuses, such as Columbia University, are indicative of the antiquated nature of institutions that he believes exist because of the “chaos” they sow.

The above after at least 133 people were arrested on Monday night following a student demonstration in favor of Palestine at New York University (NYU).

However, these arrests occur coinciding with an increase in protests on American university campuses due to the conflict in Gaza, which is why the governor of Texas stated this Wednesday that the students who are participating in a peaceful pro-Palestinian protest in the southern state They must go to jail.

“Arrests are being made at this time and will continue until the crowd disperses. These protesters should go to jaill,” Abbott said in a message on the social network X.

“Anti-Semitism will not be tolerated in Texas. Spot. “Students who join hate-filled and anti-Semitic protests at any public university or college in Texas should be expelled,” the governor added.

In that same context, Texas state police detained at least 30 protesters Wednesday on the UT Austin campus after hundreds of students walked out of classes and began a sit-in to support civilians in Gaza.

Immediately afterwards, state police on horseback and in riot gear broke into a peaceful protest against the war in the Gaza Strip.

The university had prepared for protests that began at noon, and the student affairs office sent out a statement warning students that there would be consequences for participating in the protest.

However, The demonstration showed no signs of violence before authorities intervened, although police ordered attendees to disperse and warned many that they would be arrested for trespassing.

Arrests being made right now & will continue until the crowd disperses.

These protesters belong in jail.

Antisemitism will not be tolerated in Texas. Period.

Abbott said students who join the “hate-filled anti-Semitic protests at any Texas public college or university should be expelled.”

According to specialists, the response of the state authorities of the conservative state has been one of the most forceful among the student protests that have broken out in the United States against the war that Israel is waging in Gaza and that have their epicenter at Columbia University. (NY).

Student protests against the war in Gaza and the Joe Biden Government’s support for Israel broke out weeks ago at Columbia University and they are spreading to campuses across the country.

These protests occupy the media and political landscape in the United States with Republicans and a significant portion of Democrats condemning the demonstrations and accusing pacifist students of anti-Semitism and even supporting Hamas.

Furthermore, according to experts, the protests on Texas campuses have already tested administrators’ handling of this sensitive issue and their commitment to free speech on campuses.
