Óscar de la Hoya jabs Canelo Álvarez through his lawyer: they demand that he recant

A couple of hours after Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguía gave the regulation weight for their fight this Saturday In Las Vegas, came the first public blow of the weekend with a legal warning from Óscar de la Hoya against the biggest current star in boxing.

De la Hoya, who was present at the weigh-in ceremony this Friday in front of the T-Mobile Arena, posted on his social networks the letter that his lawyer sent the day before to Canelo Álvarez’s lawyer demanding that the super middleweight world champion stop defaming the promoter and to retract it immediately after the altercation on Wednesday during the final press conference of the fight.

Canelo, angry after some provocative words from De La Hoya, confronted him and accused him of stealing money from him and other boxers who have worked with the Golden Boy promotion. A while later, in talks with reporters, Álvarez’s version changed when he indicated De la Hoya would have robbed him if it had not been for the intervention of his lawyers.

The letter sent by Óscar de la Hoya’s lawyer

“He falsely accused Oscar of a crime with the specific intent of allegedly warning other boxers not to do business with Oscar or Golden Boy. Clearly, “Canelo intentionally defamed Oscar and Golden Boy,” reads the letter published by De La Hoya. on social networks, which is directed by Ricardo P. Cestero to Gregory M. Smith, Álvarez’s lawyer.

The document emphasizes that the promoter does not owe money to the fighter it promoted for 12 years: “…Canelo also knows that neither Oscar nor Golden Boy ever stole anything from him or anyone else. In fact, Golden Boy has paid Canelo every penny he should have received from his fights with Golden Boy, and even more.”

Through the letter, De La Hoya makes it clear that he has a lawsuit ready, including punitive damages, to proceed if Canelo insists on saying he has stolen money from boxers. with whom he has done business “to make sure Canelo learns his lesson.”

“We demand that Canelo cease and desist from making more false and absurd accusations against Oscar and Golden Boy. “We also demand that Canelo immediately retract his defamatory accusations that Oscar stole from boxers,” the letter adds.

Canelo and Munguía without problems with the scale

There were no incidents at the weigh-in ceremony on Friday, but from what was seen on Wednesday, there is expectation for what could happen on the night of the fight between Canelo and De la Hoya. Jaime Munguía, by the way, said that he preferred not to get involved in the fight between his promoter and his opponent on Saturday.

Regarding the weighing of the Mexican fighters, Canelo Álvarez weighed 166.8 pounds and Jaime Munguía weighed 167.4 pounds for the fight at the 168-pound limit for the undisputed super middleweight championship. held by Álvarez, the first time that two Mexicans face each other for an undisputed title in the era of the four organizations (WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO).

They had their last face-to-face, which was once again friendly, and everything is ready for Saturday’s combat on the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend.
