After a pause of approximately three months, the US government resumed the deportation of Haitians making it clear that Temporary Protected Status for them is ruled out, at least for the moment.

According to the newspaper New York Timesafter verifying that there was no legal support that would prove his permanence in the United States territory, The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sent a first group of nearly 50 Haitians back to their nation of origin.

Faced with a wave of violence that occurred in Haiti after the resignation of Ariel Henry as prime minister, US authorities had stopped scheduling repatriation flights to Port-au-Prince.

Nevertheless, The change in strategy had already been advanced by Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of National Security, who during an interview given to the newspaper Miami Herald He warned that any Haitian discovered entering US territory would be repatriated as soon as possible.

The official also emphasized that, Unlike other groups of immigrants recently arrived in cities such as Chicago, Denver or New York, where they are being provided with shelter, food and work permits, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is not contemplated for Haitians.

Contrary to the request made by some organizations that support the rights of immigrants and ask to help citizens in whose countries violence or political instability predominates, the US authorities are reluctant to give shelter to more Haitians.

According to a report released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), during the past month, more than 13,000 Haitians who arrived in nearby countries seeking asylum ended up being sent back to the Caribbean nation.

It should be noted that Mexico has been one of the countries that has shown the greatest solidarity towards Haitians by allowing them to transit through its territory as part of their route to the United States.

Furthermore, during the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador—in solidarity—also They have been given work permits to work especially in the industrial zones located in the north of the country.

However, the majority of Caribbean citizens prefer to go to the border with the United States in the hope of achieving the so-called “American Dream.”
