Atlantic City mayor and wife accused of physically and emotionally abusing daughter

Officials reported Monday that Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. and his wife were accused of physically and emotionally abusing their teenage daughter.

Small, a 50-year-old Democrat, and his wife, La’Quetta Small, 47, are charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Marty Small is also charged with terroristic threats in the third degree, aggravated assault in the third degree and simple assault on a disorderly person. While his wife, who is superintendent of the Atlantic City Public Schools, is accused of disorderly conduct and simple assault.

The researchers said that the Smalls physically and emotionally abused their daughter on multiple occasions between December 2023 and January 2024, when she was 15 to 16 years old.according to NBC News.

During one incident, Small hit his daughter several times in the head with a broom, causing her to lose consciousness, according to investigators.

On another occasion when they were arguing, Small continually threatened to hurt his daughter by “hitting her with dirt” down the stairs, grabbing her head, throwing her to the ground and beating tissue out of her head, investigators said.

Additionally, on another occasion, Small repeatedly hit his daughter on the legs, causing bruises, according to officials.

La’Quetta Small allegedly at one point hit her daughter several times in the chest, leaving bruises, and another day she dragged her daughter by her hair and hit her with a belt on her shoulders, leaving marks. She also allegedly punched her daughter in the mouth during an argument, according to investigators.

Small’s house was searched on March 28. On April 1, the mayor, his wife and daughter attended an Atlantic City news conference at which the official said he had “nothing to hide.”

He also denied rumors that his daughter was pregnant and that his wife hit her while his son filmed the attack.

Small also spoke about the arrest of Atlantic City High School Principal Constance Days-Chapman, who was accused of failing to notify the proper authorities when a student told her he was being “emotionally and physically abused by the child’s parents.”
