President Joe Biden and the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, spoke by telephone on Sunday to address additional actions against irregular immigration, the White House reported.

“Both leaders directed their national security teams to work together to immediately implement concrete measures to significantly reduce irregular border crossings while protecting human rights,” the White House said in a statement.

The report adds that both leaders maintain their “commitment” to “strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation.”

“The two leaders discussed how to effectively manage migration from the hemisphere, strengthen operational efficiency on our shared border and thus improve the security and prosperity of the citizens of both countries,” the report adds.

Biden and López Obrador assured that they will maintain efforts to contribute to the development of those in the Western Hemisphere, in order to reduce immigration and improve security.

“They committed to promoting initiatives to address the root causes of migration throughout the Western Hemisphere,” the report says. “They noted that increasing shared prosperity and security will be critically important to effectively address the long-term migration challenge.”
