The Ecuadorian government of Daniel Noboa This Monday, April 29, he presented a counterclaim before the International Court of Justice in The Hague where he accuses Mexico of having given refuge to the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, and granting him political asylum.

Through a statement, the government of Ecuador specified that the counterclaim also includes a complaint against Andrés Manuel López Obrador for alleged interference in the internal affairs of that country and where the Mexican president said, in days prior to the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito, that the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio favored the electoral victory of Daniel Noboa in the race for the presidency.

“On this date (April 29, 2024) at 12 noon, Hague time, the Agent of Ecuador presented to the International Court of Justice the claim of Ecuador against Mexico, for the Mexico’s violations of a series of international obligations for the conduct of that country since December 17, 2023. The lawsuit filed by Ecuador also makes reference to the insulting statements made by the President of Mexico”says the statement from Ecuador.

Ecuador’s lawsuit also asks the International Court to declare that Mexico “has failed to comply with its obligations to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving Statenot to interfere in the internal affairs of the receiving State and not to use the premises of the mission in a manner incompatible with the functions of the diplomatic mission, in accordance with article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

For the Ecuadorian Government, Mexico has also “failed, among others, its obligations not to grant asylum to people who are being prosecuted or on trial for common crimes.” or have been convicted by competent ordinary courts, and to hand them over to the competent local authorities”, as contained in the diplomatic asylum and political asylum conventions of 1954 and 1933, respectively.

Faced with the countersuit and from his morning conference at the National Palace, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described the countersuit filed by the government of Daniel Noboa as “nonsense and impudence.”

“It is nonsense, it is an act of supreme arrogance, audacity. How is a public servant, a diplomat of our country who acts with dignity (Roberto Canseco), who is a source of pride for our country’s foreign policy in defense of the right to asylum, how is he going to be denounced by the invaders, by those who violate international law, the right to asylum, our sovereignty, all our support for him, for the entire mission of Mexico in Ecuador. I hope the legislators and senators take them into account to be candidates to obtain the Belisario Domínguez medal, we are going to recognize the entire mission and especially this public servant Roberto Canseco, he is truly an example to follow,” he claimed.
