Independent journalists in Mexico are accusing TelevisaUnivision of appropriating the official content of the presidential debate on Sunday, which could cause monetization problems on digital platforms.
Several well-known communicators, who operate independently, such as journalist Julio Astillero, are pointing out that the Mexican-American television station recorded on YouTube the official content of the second presidential debate between Claudia Sheinbaum, Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Máynez.
Journalists and political experts who are affected are using the hashtag #NoAlAgandalleDeUnivision to criticize that Univision claims the content of the presidential debate as its own.
“Today we have made our greatest effort to present a worthy journalistic work by covering the #PresicencialDebate2024… We have at this time almost 300 thousand reproductions. And it turns out that Univision claims some material from the debate as its own and asks to take the monetization of our work (and, we understand, of other independent media),” accused renowned journalist Julio Astillero. “We ask the audience to send messages to #Univision so that they are not gangsters.”
Academic Jesús López Almejo, an expert in International Relations, also accused that his content on social networks has been affected because Univision claims to have control of the rights to the Mexican presidential debate.
“Friends of @INEMexico, the thieving television station #UNIVISION intends to appropriate the public access content that you allow through your space financed with the money of Mexicans,” López Almejo published. “Is there a way to stop @Univision from appropriating what is not theirs?”
The presidential debate in Mexico is organized by the National Electoral Institute (INE), an autonomous non-profit organization.
The signal for the presidential debate on Sunday, April 28, was originated by the INE, but does not belong to any private television station, although it can be used to inform voters.
