The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, of legal asylum seekers from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha’s Vineyard on two flights earlier this month, stumped some business owners in that state, in need of workers.

“Why send them there when we need people here? We could use them,” said Jan Gautam, president of IHRMC, a leading hotel and resort management company.

According to IHRMC, the 60 % of your 2022 employees left the company during the pandemic, many to work from home, so now Gautam and other managers are helping with cleaning, cooking and reception.

CNN notes that asylum seekers can legally work in the United States m while they wait for their cases to be resolved. During that period, can apply for work permits, a process that usually takes 80 days before they are authorized.

According to the Office of Labor Statistics, there are 11,2 million of open jobs in the United States, a figure greater than 10,8 million last year. And in July, there were 1.5 million job vacancies in the hospitality industry.

“ We have a massive labor shortage in Florida in basically every industry here. It’s hard to see workers willing to leave their state with tax dollars,” Jessica Cooper, owner of Sugar Top Farms, located just outside Orlando, told CNN.

Governor Rob DeSantis commented that he believed asylum seekers were “trying to come to Florida”

from Texas.

Whether the asylum seekers intended to go to Florida or not, local business owners would welcome you.

Gautam told CNN that the current immigration policy is hurting his business instead of help him and believes that if more asylum seekers are granted permanent status, it will be “a game changer” for the longevity of his business and workforce.

“These people are here. They can start working and in fact they can start supporting their families. And of course, help us”, he pointed out.
