The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) of Mexico issued a public apology after the controversial statements of the head of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), Felipe de Jesús Gallo, who in a conference last Tuesday said the phrase “Mexico, champion in fentanyl.”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described it as alarmist to claim that Mexico is the champion in the production of fentanyl, for which the head of the Criminal Investigation Agency, Felipe de Jesús Gallo, publicly apologized.

“I would like the Prosecutor’s Office to clarify this, since it is very alarmist. Yes, there is a fact, we have stated it here, we are carrying out complete control of the entry of chemical precursors and we are destroying laboratories like never before, not of chemical precursors, but from there Mexico is the main producer of fentanyl if there is a great difference, that is the only thing I want, that the prosecution needs to specify,” he said.

In response, The FGR noted that the official “used an inappropriate word” to highlight the long history and magnitude of the fight against synthetic drugs in Mexico.or, relating that topic, “to the current fentanyl problem.”

The apology came after this Thursday, in his daily conference, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked the FGR “to clarify this (the statement) because it is very alarmist.”

In the note, the FGR recalled that last Tuesday, April 23, at the Multilateral Conference on Synthetic Drugs, held in this Mexico City, Gallo Gutiérrez, head of the AIC of the FGR, in part of his speech “used a inappropriate word.”

The institution said that “it is evident that said word,” which was taken by the AP agency and a Mexican media, “was inappropriate” and, for this reason, Gallo publicly apologizes. “explaining that the purpose”, in which he evidently should not have used that word, “was to highlight the long legal battle that Mexico has had to carry out to combat the production, transfer and export of synthetic drugs.”

In that same intervention, The FGR recalled that Gallo explained how North American agencies have been able to coordinate and work under Mexican regulations., carrying out joint investigations, within a monitored and acceptable legal framework, which has allowed enormous seizures of said synthetic drugs and weapons; all this with the help of the Mexican Armed Forces and the National Guard.

In that context, said the FGR, Gallo warned of all the dangers posed by international networks that try to industrialize the production and export of drugs; and what has been done to address it, which is a task that, undoubtedly, is also worthy of attention and recognition.

Fentanyl has become one of the leading causes of death in the United Statesan issue of the presidential campaign and the subject of important diplomatic efforts by the Joe Biden government.
