Sergio “Checo” Pérez finished in fifth place in the Miami GP, but regained one place after a sanction to the Spanish Carlos Sainz of Ferrari.

Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) has been sanctioned with a 5-second penalty considering that it caused a collision with Óscar Piastri (McLaren), thus losing his fourth place in the Formula One Grand Prix.

Why the sanction against Carlos Sainz?

In a statement from Formula 1, it is indicated that “Sainz had tried to overtake the McLaren at turn 17 during the final stages of the race when he slightly lost the rear of his Ferrari and came into contact with the Australian’s car.”

“This caused Piastri to suffer damage to his front wing, which forced him to make a pit stop that caused him to drop in the classification,” it is added.

The statement also states that the decision to penalize Sainz was adopted after a hearing with the stewards attended by both drivers and the representatives of their respective teams.

“It was decided that Sainz was to blame for the incident, as the Spaniard missed the apex after braking late, which caused him to lose his rear end. The stewards declared that Piastri had left ‘sufficient space’ for Sainz,” it is stated.

The stewards, however, also took into account that “if Sainz had not slightly lost the rear, the collision ‘probably would not have occurred’,” which means that the standard 10 second penalty and two penalty points was changed to a five second penalty and one penalty point

The five-second penalty causes Sainz to lose fourth place in the Miami Grand Prix in favor of Sergio Pérez, being now fifth.

How is Sergio “Checo” Pérez in points?

Checo Pérez remains second in the drivers’ championship behind Max Verstappen, his teammate at Red Bull.

The Mexican driver rises to 103 points in the general classification and is 33 points behind the Dutchman.

The next prize will be the Emilia Romagna GP in Imola, which will be held from May 17 to 19.
