88,000 California taxpayers have not requested 2020 tax refunds: IRS

Nearly 88,000 California taxpayers have not requested tax refunds for 2020, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In the middle of tax season, the IRS called not only to taxpayers in California, but across the country, because they would be losing more than 1,000 million dollars for not requesting the corresponding refunds.

According to the IRS, about 940,000 U.S. taxpayers They have until May 17, 2024 as the deadline to file tax returns for unclaimed refunds for the 2020 tax year.

Besides California, the other states that have the most people eligible to receive those refunds They are in Texas, Florida and New York.

The average tax refund per corresponding taxpayer for the 2020 tax year It is about $932 dollars.

“We want taxpayers to claim these refunds, but time is running out for people who may have overlooked or forgotten about these refunds. There is a May 17 deadline to file these returns, so taxpayers should start soon to make sure they don’t miss out,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel.

For people who need to file a return, the IRS recommended taxpayers request your W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 from your employer or bankor request a free wage and income transcript using the “Get Transcript Online” tool on the IRS website.

Each taxpayer You usually have three years to file and claim refunds before the funds are delivered to the United States Treasury.

Typically, the deadline to file a claim for old refunds falls around the April 15 tax deadline, but this year the three-year window for unfiled 2020 returns was postponed until May 17 due to the COVID pandemic.

However, if taxpayers have not filed a return for the 2021 and 2022 tax years, any 2020 refunds will be withheld until the returns corresponding to those years are submitted to ensure that they do not have tax debts.

“It is possible that some people don’t realize they are owed a refund. We encourage people to review their files and start collecting records now, so as not to risk missing the May deadline,” Werfel reiterated.
