Mourning in boxing: Colombian boxer Luis Quiñones died after fighting for several days in a coma

Colombian boxer Luis Quiñones died early this Friday after spending five days in a coma as a result of injuries sustained last Saturday during a fight in the city of Barranquilla against his compatriot José Muñoz.

Quiñones was in an induced coma after undergoing surgery for a clot in the brain after collapsing during the fight , held at the Elías Chewgin Coliseum in this Caribbean city, where he disputed the national junior welterweight title.

With only 11 years old, Luis Quiñones left a record of 10 wins and 1 loss in 11 professional boxing matches.

Leonardo Quiñones, brother of the boxer, confirmed the death in a message on social networks.

“You went ahead of us my soul brother, now you are in the lap of your heavenly father, whom you adored and you served, I love you my brother, forever and ever in our hearts”, Quiñones’ family member posted on Facebook.

Even the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, mourned the athlete’s death.

“It hurts a lot to see a young man full of dreams leave and with a whole future ahead of him. To the family of the Santander boxer Luis Quiñones: a hug from the heart, I am very sorry for this difficult moment”, the president said on Twitter.

The Colombian Boxing Federation (Fedecolbox) expressed, for its part, its condolences to the family of Quiñones, who “unfortunately passed away at midnight on Thursday, after having been declared brain dead”.

The most recent report from the General Clinic of the North, a care center where Quiñones was confined, indicated that the boxer “suffered neurological, functional and metabolic deterioration, which accompanied several ischemias in the left cerebral hemisphere.”

A native of Barrancabermeja, a town located in the center of the country on the banks of the Magdalena River, the boxer arrived at Saturday’s fight as a favorite since he was undefeated in his career , because he won the 10 fights he fought as a professional, six of them by way of knockout.

After the fight and after Quiñones entered the assistance center, his rival José Muñoz had published a letter in which he expressed his concern about his critical condition of his friend.
