The United States government deported or returned more than 690,000 undocumented immigrants to Mexico and more than 30 other countries following the expiration of border restrictions imposed by Title 42 in May of last year, authorities reported Thursday.

Title 42 was the immigration policy established on March 21, 2020 by the Donald Trump government that allowed the so-called express deportations of undocumented immigrants to Mexico.

The Democratic government of Joe Biden has insisted during these last eleven months that the end of Title 42 does not mean that the southern border is open to irregular immigration and that those people who do not have a legal basis to enter the country continue to be expelled, under Title 8, which allows immigration authorities to quickly process and expel people who arrive illegally at the United States border and do not have a legal basis to stay.

The spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Luis Miranda, explained that between May 12, 2023 and April 17 of this year, 690,000 people were deported, the vast majority of immigrants who crossed the border with Mexico without permission. .

According to Miranda, The last year has been the year with the highest number of immigrant expulsions since 2011.

The DHS spokesperson said that this will refute the “misinformation” that spreads on social networks according to which it is easy to cross the border and warned that in reality “rapid” expulsion processes are being applied.

He also pointed out that those people who request asylum and can remain in the country will take more than 150 days to obtain a work permit.

Immigration has become a central issue in the 2024 election campaign between Biden and Trump, as Republicans accuse the Democratic government of having an open borders policy and generating an “invasion” of migrants.

Last year there were a record number of more than 2 million arrests on the border with Mexicoin the midst of a global increase in the displacement of people, motivated by the search for better economic opportunities in the United States and fleeing different social and political crises in America and other places in the world.
