The five cent coin, colloquially called ‘nickel’was not the first coin of this denomination in the country, that honor goes to the ‘half dime or half ten that appeared in circulation for the first time in 1974. The modern American ‘nickel’ I don’t know I think until 1866 and if you are lucky enough to find one of the Common or old versions of the 5-cent coin could end up earning thousands of dollars.

And in some cases even millions. For example with the 5 cent coin known as the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel; which according to American Bullion, is one of the most “legendary and mysterious” coins in the history of the United States. The coin is said to have been produced illegally because it occurred during the transition from Liberty Head to Buffalo Nickels.

In terms of rarity and value, you’ll most likely find the most valuable nickels in older, pre-World War I mintages.
