The Colombian Juan Camilo ‘Cucho’ was one of the protagonists of the duel by scoring the first goal that led to the victory of the three-time MLS monarch team.

What do the statistics say?

Statistics indicate that whenever Columbus, the only MLS survivor in the Champions Cup, wins the first match of its qualifying rounds in the Concacaf tournament, it advances to the round.

In 2021, they were the winners in the first leg of their round of 16 series against Nicaraguan Real Estelí and moved on to the quarterfinals, and the same thing happened this year, in the last 16 phase against Houston Dynamo.

Howeverthe Crew goes against the history of the semifinal duels between Mexicans and Americans, since from the 2008-2009 season onwards, the Latinos have won six times compared to only one of the MLS, which was in 2020 in the edition of the covid-19 pandemic that was played in a single match, when LAFC beat América.

Hernández will be key in the Crew’s dream of being in the final, in which the pass to the Club World Cup will be at stake, because the Colombian is the player with the most shots on his team in the tournament, with 14, and is two goals to equal Steven Lenhart, as the club’s all-time top scorer in the Champions Cup.

Los Rayados, already qualified for the next Club World Cup by winning the Concacaf competition in 2021, are undefeated in the semifinal series they have played since 2008-2009.

In its last five qualifying rounds in the best four phase, it has passed the round and won the five cup titles it has in its history, which makes it the third highest winner of the tournament along with Pachuca.
