The president of the United States, Joe Biden, reaffirmed this Tuesday his “strong” commitment to Israel, even when “there are disagreements”and assured that in American universities, shaken for weeks by protests against the war in Gaza, “there is no place for anti-Semitism.”

“My commitment to the security of the Jewish people, the security of Israel and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is unwavering.. Even when we disagree,” she said during a speech at a Capitol Hill ceremony to remember Holocaust victims.

Biden condemned the “fierce rise in anti-Semitism in the United States” and warned that even today the world “risks not knowing the truth” about the horrors of the Holocaust, when six million Jews were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany.

“This hatred remains rooted in the hearts of too many people in the world“, lamented the president, at the same time that he considered that the attack by the Islamist group Hamas on October 7 “gave life” to that hatred with the murder of 1,200 Israelis.

“This did not happen 75 years ago, but only seven and a half months ago, and people are already forgetting it, they are forgetting that Hamas unleashed that terror, that it was Hamas that attacked the Israelis and that it was Hamas that took hostages. “I have not forgotten it and neither have you, and we will not forget it,” Biden promised.

The president also alluded to the protests by students opposed to Israel’s war in Gaza that have broken out throughout the country and which now total more than 2,700 detainees.

“There is no place on any American campus or anywhere in the US for anti-Semitism., hate speech or threats or violence of any kind. Not against the Jews or against anyone,” he stated.

“I want the Jewish community to know that I see your fear., their pain, their suffering. Let me assure you, as his president, that you are not alone,” he added.

Biden has adopted a tough line regarding the protests. Although she has supported the students’ right to free expression, she has considered that the current mobilizations are violent and anti-Semitic, even though the vast majority have passed peacefully.

The reason for these balances is the pressure that Biden faces ahead of the November electionssince it simultaneously requires the support of the young vote that protests in universities against their support for Israel, and attracting the independent electorate, more favorable to Israel.

Meanwhile, former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021), his future rival in the elections, has used the demonstrations to attack Biden and question his support for Israel, despite the fact that the magnate himself has alluded to it in his speech at the passed into rhetoric of Nazi Germany.

This same Monday, Trump’s campaign released a video in which he is seen visiting Israel and pledging to support the Jewish peopleinterspersed with images of campus protests and fragments of Biden’s statements.
