This Monday came the news that had been expected for several days within the Hammers: David Moyes will not renew his contract as manager and will leave the team’s bench at the end of this season, so Edson Álvarez and West Ham will have a new coach for the 2024-25 campaign.

Through a statement published on its website and spread on social networks, the Premier League team where the Mexican plays confirmed the departure of its current manager.

“David Moyes will leave the club by mutual agreement at the end of the 2023/24 season, when his contract expires”, summarized West Ham in the text with which they disseminated the information.

Moyes leaves his position at the club after 4 and a half years of managing it, a period in which he won the UEFA Europa Conference League, West Ham’s first title since 1980 and its first European title since 1965.

“I really enjoyed working with everyone at West Ham and I would like to thank the Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club,” the manager mentioned in the statement before his imminent departure.

In the letter, the board also thanks the coach for the time dedicated to the institution, in which he contributed to the growth of West Ham and during which they broke a drought of more than 40 years without a championship.

Julen Lopetegui will be the successor according to reports

According to what was published by different Spanish media, including the EFE agency, Julen Lopetegui will be the one to take over from Moyes at West Ham.

Thus, The Spanish coach would return to the top English competition next seasonwhere he already coached Wolverhampton Wanderers from November 2022 to August 2023, directing 27 official matches and leaving the position after the club did not provide him with the signings it promised and the financial problems that the entity caused, which forced for sale of key players like Matheus Nunes.

That option came for Lopetegui after he left the Sevilla bench, where he was between July 2019 and October 2022; just after a stay of less than a season in the ranks of Real Madrid after being dismissed as Spanish coach on the eve of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

In addition, the former goalkeeper has also worked as a coach for Portuguese side Porto; in the lower categories of the Spanish team; at Real Madrid Castilla; and at Rayo Vallecano, which was his first experience after retiring from that club in 2022.

West Ham, champion of the Conference League last season, occupies ninth position in England, with two days remaining in the Premier League.
