United States government officials rejected the proposal of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to extend to Central America the Sembrando Vida program in exchange for the delivery of visas for the participants.

In a session with US administration officials to discuss the climate summit convened by President Joe Biden, scheduled for this Thursday and Friday virtually, were asked about the proposal that López Obrador said he will present during his participation in the summit .

One of the Biden administration officials commented that they hardly heard of the proposal and that “ It doesn’t sound like it’s been part of an extended conversation yet , neither in Mexico nor between Mexico and the United States. ”

The official said he knew two parts of the proposal. One on tree planting and another on migration issues.

“We definitely see value in natural solutions related to tree planting. If we look at the climate change agenda, the issue of reforestation is one of the priorities . Most of a third of global emissions come from land use, ”explained the official, adding that the tree planting agenda has enormous value for the environment.

However, he emphasized, “we are not focused on the intersection between issues. For us, the climate agenda has to be addressed alone, according to its own merits and move it forward, and it is not a conversation, from our point of view, about migration . It is a conversation about climate change. ”

López Obrador announced on Sunday that during the climate summit, in which they will participate 40 world leaders, would raise the proposal of extend the Sembrando Vida program to Central American countries in exchange for granting work visas and eventually citizenship to participants .

The Mexican president already had everything prepared, “At three years, once you have your crop, you are automatically entitled to a six-month work visa for the United States. You go six months and return to your town, and after three years, after having your work visa, with good behavior, you already have the right to apply for your US nationality ”.

In Mexico, the Sembrando Vida program aims to of jobs, the encouragement of food self-sufficiency, the improvement of the income of the inhabitants and the forest recovery of one million hectares in the country. In return, the beneficiaries receive a payment of $ 250 dollars (5 ,000 Mexican pesos) and technical support to plant timber and fruit trees.

The program in Mexico has received criticism for its design and execution , in addition to the fact that it is estimated that contrary to its objective it has caused deforestation .
