The Fire Within
When they make a movie about your life and you are not yet 30 years old, you have had an intense and interesting story. This is the case of Claressa Shields, an African-American woman from Flint, Michigan. In a city hit by the economic, environmental and social crisis, young Claressa (played by Ryan Destiny) takes out her frustration at the local gym, where she is the only woman who dares to get into the ring. Under the tutelage of Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry), who sees in her a talent that only emerges once in a generation, Claressa begins her training in 2006 as just a child. Her hard work and ability make her one of the best in the country and she reaches youth titles. Already in 2011, while still in high school, she qualifies for the 2012 Olympics. Nicknamed “T-Rex” for her powerful short arms, Claressa becomes unstoppable and wins the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Despite this victory, life in Flint remains a challenge for Claressa and her mother, Jackie (Olunike Adeliyi). “The Fire Inside” is the first feature film directed by Rachel Morrison, noted director of photography for Ryan Coogler films such as “Black Panther” and “Fruitvale Station.”
