Mercedes' strategy to challenge the Tesla Model 3

The race to conquer the electric car market does not give up, and Mercedes-Benz knows it. Despite its progress, the German firm faces significant challenges: the drop in sales of its electric models and the lack of a clear rival for the Tesla Model 3.

However, the new electric Mercedes CLA promises to change the rules of the game, combining cutting-edge technology, greater efficiency and reasonable prices.

In 2023electric cars represented almost the 12% of Mercedes-Benz sales. However, 2024 has shown a decline with a decrease in 22% on deliveries of these models.

Examples such as the Mercedes EQS and EQE, which were initially intended to be benchmarks, now stand out for their disappointing figures in key markets such as China and Spain. The need for a strategic shift is evident, and Mercedes is betting on the electric CLA as the solution.

A new platform for a new beginning

The electric Mercedes CLA will be the first model based on the MMA (Modular Mercedes Architecture) platform, a new generation architecture that promises to revolutionize the brand’s electric cars.

This platform, designed to support both electric and 48V micro-hybrid powertrains, reflects Mercedes’ pragmatic approach as the market transitions towards full electrification.

With an electrical system 800 voltsthe MMA platform ensures superior efficiency and significantly reduced loading times.

Mercedes assures that the electric CLA will set new standards in autonomy, consumption and charging speed, supported by innovations already proven in the Vision EQXX prototype.

Performance and autonomy: redefining expectations

The electric CLA will offer two battery options. The first, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) with a capacity of 58 kWhwill be aimed at more accessible versions.

The second, an 85 kWh lithium-ion batterywill use silicon oxide cells in the anode, which will increase their energy density. This configuration promises an average consumption of 12 kWh/100 km and ranges that may exceed 750 km, competing directly with diesel models in efficiency.

The larger capacity battery will also enable ultra-fast charging, supporting up to 320 kW.

On supported stations, this will result in the possibility of adding more than 200 km of autonomy in just 10 minutes and almost 400 km in 15 minutes. These figures place the CLA as one of the leaders in charging technology within its segment.

A direct rival for the Tesla Model 3

Designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3, the electric CLA will have rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

The base versions are expected to offer engines approximately 272 horsepower (200 kW)while the all-wheel drive variants will exceed 300 horsepower thanks to an additional motor on the front axle.

The introduction of The LFP battery will allow Mercedes to adjust the entry price of the CLAplacing it as the brand’s most affordable electric model.

Although no official figures have been confirmed, it is estimated that the CLA could start from a price lower than the $60,000 dollarspositioning itself competitively against the Tesla Model 3whose initial price is $39,990 dollars.

The challenges of competing with Tesla

The Tesla Model 3, with ranges ranging from 513 km to more than 700 km in its Long Range version, continues to be the reference standard in the market. Additionally, its network of Superchargers offers a key advantage in charging infrastructure, an area where Mercedes still faces limitations.

However, the electric CLA differentiates itself by offering a more luxurious interior and high-quality materials, aspects that Tesla has prioritized less. Mercedes will also look to attract buyers who value the classic design and refined driving experience of its vehicles.

The future of Mercedes in electrification

The launch of the electric CLA will mark a milestone in Mercedes-Benz’s electrification strategy. Although the path towards an all-electric portfolio in 2030 remains challenging, the CLA represents a crucial step to consolidate its presence in an increasingly competitive market.

With a renewed focus on range, technology and affordability, the electric CLA could become the game-changer Mercedes needs to reaffirm its leadership in the era of zero-emission cars.

Now, the big question is whether this new sedan will manage to shorten the gap with Tesla and redefine the concept of accessible luxury in the electric market.
