China “firmly” denounced this Sunday the new military aid of $571 million dollars agreed by the United States to Taiwan, an island with its own democratic government that Beijing considers part of its territory.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “firmly” opposed this decision which, in its opinion, “seriously violates China’s sovereignty and its security interests.”

The White House, in the last month of Joe Biden’s presidency, authorized on Friday, December 20, a disbursement of $571 million dollars in military “articles and services” “to provide assistance to Taiwan.”

In September, Biden had already approved $567 million in aid for this island that, although it barely enjoys international recognition, has a government, army and its own currency.

Although the United States recognizes the Government of Beijing and does not formally maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it has been the island’s main ally and arms supplier for decades.

In recent years, China increases military and political pressure on Taiwan and regularly sends Army planes and ships or deploys large maneuvers in its surroundings.
