The Houston Astros have taken an important step to strengthen their lineup by signing the first baseman Christian Walker with a three-year, $60 million contract, as reported by MLB.com this Friday.
With this move, the current champions of the American League West Division are betting on a proven figure to stabilize their offense and defense.
Walker, 33, arrives after an outstanding career with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team with which he was a key player on the road to the 2023 World Series.
Averaging 29 home runs per season over his career, Walker is a constant threat in the middle of the lineup.a quality that will be crucial after the departure of José Abreu and the uncertainty surrounding Alex Bregman, who remains in free agency.
In the most recent season, Walker had 26 doubles, 26 home runs and 84 runs. RBIs in 130 games, with a batting average of .251.
In addition to his offensive power, the first baseman has stood out for his solid defense, winning the Gold Glove in the last three seasons, which further strengthens the right side of the field along with Venezuelan José Altuve at second base.
Isaac Paredes will play third base for the Houston Astros
With the arrival of Walker, the Astros profile Isaac Paredes as the main option at third base, unless Bregman decides to return.
Likewise, this move solidifies the strategy of manager Joe Espada, who will look to take advantage of the combination of experience and young talent to keep Houston as a title contender.
The addition of Walker also makes up for the loss of Kyle Tucker, who was sent to the Chicago Cubs in the exchange for Paredes.
The new first baseman, known for his leadership and consistency, will have the responsibility of being a key piece both on and off the field of play.
With this acquisition, the Houston Astros reinforce their commitment to remaining among the elite teams in the Major Leagues, seeking a new championship in the coming years.
