Genaro García Lunawho was Secretary of Security in Mexico, will serve his sentence in a prison in Virginia, where he will not be able to be visited for an indefinite period of time.

The former official, who served during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón, has entered the High Security Penitentiary of Lee County, Virginia, where he will remain until 2052.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) registered García Luna’s entry into the prison. His record sheet also shows the date of his release: August 8, 2052.

Lee Penitentiary is the third and last prison he has set foot in.. During his trial and sentencing he remained in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. He was later transferred to the Federal Transfer Center, FTC, in Oklahoma.

The Virginia Penitentiary finished construction in 2002, and has strict protocols within a facility that makes communication between inmates difficult, so only scheduled visits are allowed.

Correspondence is also regulated so that prisoners maintain ties with family members.

It has a satellite camp to guarantee the safety of the almost 1,500 prisoners it can house; However, The Marshall Project and National Public Radio have released some lawsuits against security officials for racism and violence against several inmates in a solitary confinement unit.

The prison information indicates that visitors can access the prison during specific hours: “Sundays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with additional hours on Fridays.”

The BOP website has recently reported that All visits to this high security prison are suspended until further notice.
