Following the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, police say they are now being threatened along with locals involved in the arrest.
At a news conference at the Altoona Police Department, Deputy Chief Derek Swope said they are investigating threats made against the department and local residents who were involved in the arrest.
“This is clearly a very polarized case. We have received some threats against our officers and the building here. We have begun to investigate some threats here against some citizens in our community. We are taking all of those threats seriously and doing as much follow-up as we can on them,” said Derek Swope, deputy chief of the Altoona Police Department.
Luigi Mangione was arrested at the McDonald’s on Plank Road andn Monday morning when an employee alerted authorities about the man’s presence in the establishment.
Shortly after, negative reviews began appearing on the restaurant’s website, some of which reported alleged health problems such as rat infestation.
Although many of these reviews were removed by Google, which argued that they violated rules by not being based on real experiences, some reviews remained visible several days later. The indirect references to the case generated a debate on social networks about the ethics and impact of this type of publications.
According to reports, Mangione was found with a pistol and a silencer, which are believed to have been 3D printed, and several fake IDs, including one that the NYPD said he used days before the shooting to check into a shelter in the city.
It should be noted that One of the officers who helped capture Luigi Mangione had only been on the force for six months, Altoona Police Officer Tyler Frye. who was one of two uniformed officers who responded to the Pennsylvania City McDonald’s, said each of them recognized the seated suspect once he lowered his blue medical mask.
