More than 2,000 migrants are getting ready this Sunday to integrate a new caravan that will leave on foot in the early hours of Monday from the Mexican city of Tapachula, state of Chiapasborder with Guatemala, to try to reach the United States.
The departure of the thousands of migrants occurs amid tensions between Mexico and the United States prior to the arrival to the White House of the US president-elect, Donald Trump, who has announced mass deportations of migrants when he takes power.
This Sunday the undocumented immigrants met to review their action plan and define the stages of your walk. The caravan is made up of people, mostly from Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Central American countries.
Miguel Ángel, a migrant from Ecuador, told EFE that in recent days the number of people who decide to leave Tapachula has increased due to insecurity, the agglomeration of migrants and the desperation of reaching a place where they can settle and get a job.
He said that migrants no longer trust the National Migration Institute (INM), dependent on the Ministry of the Interior (Interior) of Mexico.
“I’m going to be honest, there is no one to trust, we have witnessed when immigration agents say they are going to help us”But it’s a lie and they detain us for three days and they don’t help us with documents or anything, that’s why we don’t trust anyone, we only go with the help of God,” he noted.
Meanwhile, a migrant from El Salvador, Elieser, told EFE that they have been staying in Tapachula for one month and 10 days, a time in which they would have already traveled the little more than 1,100 kilometers between Tapachula and Mexico City. , capital of the country.
“People are tired of being in Tapachula, there is no work, there are no accommodations to sleep, there is no money and people have been waiting between four and five months and they are not getting anything in this city,” he said.
He pointed out that they know that there are many obstacles to reaching Mexico City and warned that they will not allow themselves to be intimidated or accept any treatment from the Mexican authorities since their objective is to walk against the clock to the border with the United States.
The migrants agreed to arrive at Bicentenario Park in Tapachula on Sunday night, so that during the first hours of Monday they will leave in the hope of being able to reach Mexico City.
Another migrant from Venezuela, Bryan, said that they have decided organize this caravan because they cannot leave by bus from Tapachula and they do not have a job, while they wait for the CBP ONE appointment, to be able to apply for asylum in the United States.
“We will walk out on Monday morning, we ask the United States government to open the door for us”We go there to work, it doesn’t matter which president is there,” he noted.
This Sunday, the caravan that left Tapachula on November 20 advances through the municipality of Arriaga, Chiapas, about 250 kilometers from Tapachula, with the aim of crossing into the state of Oaxaca, a neighbor of Chiapas, in the south of the country. to continue on their way to Mexico City.
In total, Mexico detected a record of 925,085 irregular migrants from January to August 2024, an increase of 131.86% compared to the 398,991 in the same period of the previous year.
