The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumassured that Your government has a “plan”in the event that the president-elect of the United StatesDonald Trump fulfill the threat of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican products, including oil.
Last Monday, Donald Trump threatened Mexico with imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican imports if the Sheinbaum government did not stop the migration phenomenon and fentanyl trafficking.
Although President Sheinbaum trusted that Trump is not going to apply tariffs to Mexico and that an agreement will be reached between both governments on the issues of drug trafficking and migration.
“We are going to agree, “I am convinced, defending our sovereignty, with respect for Mexicans, with respect for Mexico and in the collaboration that one government must have with another and one trading partner with another, such important trading partners,” Sheinbaum stated in his now usual morning conference held from the National Palace.
But he clarified that if the Trump government complies with the threat of tariffs, Mexico has a “plan” to respond to said measure.
“If it were to happen, we still have a plan, but the objective is for it not to happen,” said President Sheinbaum.
The Mexican president made it clear that the work will always be collaborative, not under subordination.
“We collaborate, we never subordinate ourselves. “If we manage to coordinate on this, there will be no tariffs,” Sheinbaum assured in his conference this Friday.
Sheinbaum highlighted that it is also a topic that does not keep him up at night, since more and more, Mexico produces oil for domestic consumption and exports less.
“Mexico already exports much less oil, hey!, that is part of a sovereignty project. The oil we produce is refined in Mexico to be sold in Mexico, so the vast majority of the oil we produce is refined in Mexico, and the second train of the Olmeca refinery is practically running,” said Sheinbaum Pardo.
Last Wednesday Sheimbaum and Trump held a phone call where they addressed the issues of migration, drug trafficking and security.
Sheinbaum gave details of his dialogue with Trump at Thursday’s conference, where he clarified that the issue of tariffs was not addressed, since they touched on key issues such as migration, security and drug trafficking, which are why the president-elect threatened to impose tariffs.
The Mexican president ruled out the possibility of a trade war.
