The British George Russell won the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but the night in “Sin City” belonged to Max Verstappen, who secured his fourth consecutive championship from Formula 1 at the age of 27
Red Bull’s Verstappen finished in fifth place on the colorful circuit that runs along the Las Vegas Strip. He is the first driver to win four titles in a row since Britain’s Lewis Hamilton did so between 2017 and 2020.
Hamilton was second for the Mercedes team’s 1-2 and the Spanish Carlos Sainz was third, followed by his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc. The Mexican Sergio Pérez had a good race and came in 10th place after starting from 16th position after another suffered qualification, the umpteenth of his adverse season.
Verstappen’s coronation comes early. The 2024 season has the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi remaining. The new four-time champion now has a 63-point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris, who finished sixth in Las Vegas. That difference is irreversible.
The other drivers who have won four or more top-flight championships are Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.
