The Court of Appeals of Georgia on Monday canceled scheduled oral arguments in the president-elect’s bid donald trump to disqualify the Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willisof the 2020 election interference case against Trump and 14 others.
In a brief order, the court declared that the Dec. 5 argument before that court is canceled “until further order of this court.”
Fani Willis, a veteran prosecutor, brought charges against Trump, some of his former campaign and administration officials, and others implicated in August 2023, for their alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election from Georgia that he lost to President Joe Biden. Four of the defendants have pleaded guilty.
A suspended trial
The sprawling racketeering and influence-peddling case has been on hold since June, pending the outcome of the president-elect’s attempt to remove the Atlanta-area district attorney from the case.
The case has been on hold due to Trump’s efforts to disqualify Willis as a prosecutor.
Trump alleges that Willis’s affair with the lead prosecutor she appointed to the sprawling racketeering case, Nathan Wade, compromised her ability to oversee it.
Trump and other defendants have asked the Court of Appeals to overturn a ruling by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who said in March that Willis can remain on the case if Wade resigns, making immediate.
The judge had said he would allow some trial preparations to continue while the case is appealed.
Trump has suggested that, if elected, would eliminate the various legal cases against him, and Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith is closing the two federal cases he brought against Trump.
