Australian Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, announced his retirement from the competitive scene after his controversial participation in Break at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Gunn, 37, failed to win the judges’ approval and his performance became trend on social networks, but not precisely because of the success I would have expected on the Olympic stage.
In his speechGunn surprised with unusual movements, including jumps that were reminiscent of a kangaroowhich unleashed a wave of comments and memes that spread rapidly on the Internet.
In a recent interview with broadcaster 2DayFM, Raygun admitted feeling “disappointed” by the scrutiny surrounding her participation in the Games.
Although he assured that he will continue dancing for the love of the discipline, he clarified that his career in competitions has come to an end. “I still break, but I don’t compete. “I’m not going to compete anymore,” he said.
Gunn retires after long break career
Gunn’s retirement marks an unexpected end for a dancer who had recently reached first place in the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) world rankings.
Despite criticism, this recognition had established her as one of the most prominent figures in the breakdance scene, especially considering that this discipline was included for the first time in the Olympic Games.
Gunn’s selection as an Olympic representative was questioned by some sectors who considered that his style lacked the traditional elements of competitive breakdancing.
Raygun commented how the hype around her performance made her feel like she had lost control over her public image and personal life, finding herself trapped in an alien narrative.
However, she also talked about the messages of support she received, from people who thanked her for inspiring them and reminded them of the importance of enjoying dance without fear of other people’s judgment.
“Dancing is very fun and makes you feel good. “I don’t think people should feel bad about the way they dance,” said Gunn, reaffirming his conviction that the art of breakdancing should be maintained.
