The former president donald trump rode in a garbage truck before his election rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, in a dig directed at the president Joe Biden.
Biden sparked a frenzy among Republicans and Trump supporters earlier this week when he appeared to refer to Trump supporters as “trash.”
“What do you think of my garbage truck?” Trump told reporters while sitting in the passenger seat of a white truck adorned with the Trump 2024 campaign logo. “This truck is in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden.”
Trump posed for photos while wearing a neon orange and yellow vest and sitting in the passenger seat of a garbage truck.
Photos of the truck and the former president in the passenger seat were widely shared by Trump campaign staff.
The campaign has sought to capitalize on outrage among Trump supporters over Biden’s comment, even as Vice President Harris has distanced herself from the comment.
Kamala Harris on Wednesday asked Americans to “stop pointing fingers at each other” as she tried to brush aside comments made by President Joe Biden about Donald Trump supporters and “trash” and keep the spotlight on his Republican opponent in the final days of the race.
The controversy began Tuesday, at the same time Harris was speaking near the White House, when Biden participated in a campaign call hosted by the Hispanic advocacy group Voto Latino.
Biden took the opportunity to criticize Sunday’s rally at Madison Square Garden, where a comedian described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
“The only trash I see floating around are his supporters. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American,” Biden said. “It is totally contrary to everything we have done, everything we have been.”
The president and the White House were immediately doing damage control, sharing a recording that showed Biden had not intended to say this, but already Republicans were capitalizing on the incident.
Republicans seized on Biden’s commentsstating that they were an echo of the time when Hillary Clinton, as a Democratic candidate in 2016, said that half of Trump’s supporters belonged to a “basket of deplorables.”
“We know what they believe. Because look how they have been treated,” Trump said at his rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on Wednesday. “They have been treated like trash. The truth is that they have treated our entire country like garbage.”
