“Iraq officially presented a memorandum of protest (…) which included condemnation of the flagrant violation committed by Israel” by violating the airspace and sovereignty of Iraq and using Iraqi airspace to carry out the attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran, on October 26 of this year,” indicated an official Iraqi statement. The protest note was addressed to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and the Security Council.

For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al Sudani “ordered to address this violation with the United States, since the bilateral strategic agreement stipulates a US commitment to the security and sovereignty of Iraq.”

He stressed that the Iraqi Government “is working at various levels to address these violations, and emphasizes not allowing Iraqi airspace or lands to be used to attack other countries, especially neighbors with whom Iraq has respectful relations.” and common interests”.

Iran calls for Security Council meeting

Iran, for its part, called on Sunday for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council over last Saturday’s Israeli attacks against the Islamic Republic, in which five Iranian soldiers were killed.

According to Tehran, Israeli fighters used US airspace in Iraq to launch long-range air-to-ground missile attacks against Iranian air defense systems and radars in the provinces of Ilam, Khuzestan and Tehran.

However, US authorities have assured that Washington was not directly involved in the attack and that it has made intense diplomatic efforts so that Israel’s response was proportional and avoided nuclear or oil targets.

The Israeli attack was a response to Iran’s launch, on October 1, of 180 missiles against the Jewish State, which in turn were a retaliation for the assassination by Israel of the leaders of the Hezbollah and Hamas groups, both allies. from Tehran.
