Hispanic man arrested for defrauding the elderly in Los Angeles

Authorities arrested a Hispanic man whose job placed him in a position of control as an employee at a nursing facility and took advantage of devising a scheme that allowed him to defraud elderly and vulnerable people in Los Angeles.

Jesús Caín Medina Leyva, 28 years oldwas arrested by Glendale Police Department detectives on October 17, according to a statement from authorities issued on October 24.

According to the statement, Medina Leyva is accused of multiple counts of identity theft and elder financial abuse.

The investigation of the case lasted for two months and that ended with the arrest of the suspect.

During the investigation, detectives unraveled Medina Leyva’s plan to defraud elderly patients in a nursing facility located in the 400 block of East Cypress Street, in the city of Glendale.

On August 28, 2024, the Glendale Police Department received reports of an elderly patient at the nursing facility due to her credit cards being stolen from his own room.

When Glendale Police Financial Crimes Detectives were investigating the theft, they discovered six additional victims in the same nursing facility.

The authorities carried out exhaustive and diligent investigative work, with which the detectives managed to identify Medina Leyva, an employee of the facility, as the suspected of illegally taking victims’ credit cards from their rooms and use them in a variety of stores and restaurants.

Medina Leyva was accused of seven counts of identity theft and financial abuse of the elderly.
