Life sentence for Oklahoma grandmother who killed her granddaughter and left her body in a trash can

A 63-year-old Oklahoma grandmother will likely spend the rest of her days behind bars for killing her 3-year-old granddaughter and letting the girl’s body decompose in a trash can for several days.

Cleveland County District Court Judge Lynne McGuire ordered Becky Ann Vreeland who served a life sentence in a state prison for the murder of the minor in 2022 Riley Lynn Nolanas shown by court records consulted by Law&Crime.

Authorities accused Vreeland of beating Riley to death, leaving indentations in the bathroom wall that they say were “the size of a child’s head.”

A few days ago Vreeland pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder in connection with Riley’s death. According to Oklahoma state law, a life sentence is considered 45 years.

Due to the severity of the crime, Vreeland must complete at least 85% of his sentence, meaning he must serve more than 38 years before he would be eligible for parole, at which time he would be 99 years old.

According to The Oklahoman, as part of the plea agreement single charge of desecration of a human corpse was dismissed.

According to the Oklahoma City Police Department’s initial press release, it responded on June 21, 2022 to an “unknown trouble call” at a home located at 600 SW151 Street. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders learned that there was a deceased child in the residence.

“Officers found the body of three-year-old Riley Nolan in a trash can at the home.”says the statement. “The girl had obvious signs of trauma on her body.”

Investigators said that at the time of the incident, the younger Riley was in the care of her grandmother, identified in the release as Vreeland. Police transported the woman to department headquarters, where she was interviewed and later booked into the Cleveland County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Vreeland He maintained that his granddaughter’s death was a tragic accidentrepeatedly stating that Riley died after falling from a ladder in the backyard.

A homicide detective detailed that Riley’s body was discovered inside a trash container just outside the Vreeland home, where the girl’s toys were also located and had been covered with two blankets.

The detective explained that investigators They located blood spatters throughout Vreeland’s houseincluding in the master bedroom, master bathroom, and several other areas of the home.

Additionally, he testified that upon searching the master bathroom, police found two small circular indentations in the wall that “appear to be the size of a child’s head.”

Vreeland told police he regularly put Riley’s toys in the recycling bin in the back of the house. He further stated that there was a pool ladder next to the container, so he assumed Riley climbed it only to fall to his death. Grandma said she found Riley dead when he woke up the next morning.

However, it was Vreeland’s ex-husband – and Riley’s grandfather – who found the girl’s already decomposing body in the container three days after her death and called the police. Vreeland She said she didn’t call the authorities because she feared her other grandchildren would be taken away from her..

Police said the ladder next to the recycling bin was missing the base and would immediately collapse if anyone tried to use it.
