The power of our voice: celebrating Latino heritage and participation in the US.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at this crucial time for the United States is a source of deep pride. It is no secret that Latinos have left a mark that grows deeper every year, and today we are the second ethnic group in the US with the power to vote. Our presence and contribution are undeniable, now and in the years to come. We are defined by our strength, resilience and firm commitment to building a more prosperous country, where we live with dignity and harmony. That’s why this year, our celebration this month goes far beyond culture: it’s about the power of our voices and the impact of our participation, especially in the electoral arena.

At Poder Latinx, we have witnessed firsthand the strength of civic engagement. In 2024, we work in different cities to motivate Mexican residents in the US to register and vote in their country’s elections. The message was clear: no matter where you live, your voice matters and can change the future. That effort, made in conjunction with many allies, bore fruit, and Mexico welcomed its first female president.

Here in the United States our civic power has a similar impact. In a few weeks the general elections will be held and it is vital that we, Latinos, show up. We have proven time and time again that our vote has power. We are not a “sleeping giant”. We are millions of Hispanics who make up a community deeply committed to democracy, whether in the countries we come from or in this country that we now call our home.

With this power comes a responsibility. We must combat the apathy that keeps many from voting and resist those who try to misinform us to deprive us of our right to vote. These tactics seek to silence our voices, but if we remain strong and well-informed, we can ensure that every vote counts.

These elections go beyond politics. It’s about the future of our families, our communities, and the issues that matter most to us: education, health, jobs, and much more. Our community surveys support that Latino priorities encompass issues such as the environment (such as extreme weather in Arizona and Florida), access to reproductive health care, fair treatment of immigrants, and labor rights such as paid time off. .

By registering and voting, we ensure that our voices are heard and our needs are not ignored. This year, the vote of young people, women and new voters will be especially powerful. That’s why this Hispanic Heritage Month must include an unwavering commitment to our electoral participation: because there is too much at stake, for us as a community and for the entire country.

Let us honor our heritage not only by celebrating, but by taking action. If you haven’t already, register to vote. And when Election Day comes, remember: our progress begins with our participation. United, we can build a better future for all.

The future is in our hands! Register, vote and lead the change.
