During a rally held at the Detroit Economic Club, Donald Trump, Republican presidential candidate, on a couple of occasions attacked said city, which he defined as a “disaster.”

While citing China as a developing nation, the New York tycoon noted that Detroit was in a worse situation.

“Well, we’re a developing nation too, just look at Detroit. Detroit is a more developing area than most places in China“, he indicated.

Minutes later, using a mocking tone, the 78-year-old conservative warned that the entire country could end up like Detroit if Democrat Kamala Harris is elected to govern from the White House for the next four years.

“Our entire country will end up being like Detroit if she is its president. They will have a mess on their hands,” he stressed.

And as expected, The response from Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic governor of Michigan, quickly emerged through a message published on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

“Detroit is the epitome of grit, defined by winners willing to get their hands dirty to build their city and create their communities, something Donald Trump could never understand.. So don’t talk about Detroit. And believe it, Detroiters won’t forget it in November,” he wrote.

Michael Edward Duggan, Democratic mayor of Detroit, also used the same platform to try to debunk the claims of the nation’s former president.

“Detroit just hosted the largest NFL Draft in history, the Tigers are back in the playoffs, the Lions are headed to the Super Bowl, crime is down, and our population is growing. Many cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump’s help,” the 66-year-old politician wrote.

According to some political analysts, Michigan is a key state to define the next November elections and, 25 days before most citizens go to the polls, the average of Decision Desk HQ/The Hill polls project a quite close state election with the advantage towards Kamala Harris, but only by one point and with a considerable percentage of undecided about who to support.
