Julio César Chávez, considered the best Mexican boxer in history, He assured this Monday that he would like his compatriot Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez to have David Benavidez as his next rival.

“Everyone wants the fight with Benavidez, I think sooner or later it will happen, but it doesn’t depend on me. As a fan I would like Benavidez’s,” he explained to the media at an event in Mexico City.

Chávez, a retired world champion boxer in three different divisions, described ‘Canelo’, three-time super middleweight champion, as “one of Mexico’s great fighters.”

“’Canelo’ is a great fighter, he is the best Mexican champion there is today. He is Mexican and we must support him. I like the way he boxes, I can’t speak badly of him, he has been respectful to me and I can only do the same; “He is one of the greatest fighters in Mexico,” added the boxer who retired with a record of 107 wins, 85 by knockout, six losses and two draws.

The native of Ciudad Obregón, in northern Mexico, defended his son Omar, who last Saturday was accused by his rival, Olympic medalist Misael Rodríguez, of exceeding the weight limit established by the Mexico City Boxing Commission at the second weigh-in, on the day of the fight.

For this reason, Rodríguez, winner of the bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro 2016, did not enter the ring in the fight between the two, in which no world title was at stake.

“It is an injustice to me that the Boxing Commission sets a four and a half kilo rehydration limit, Omar gave the weight he had to give at the weigh-in ceremony (weigh-in that takes place one day before the fight). “Omar and Misael signed a contract in which that clause was not included,” stated the winner of world championships in super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight.
