The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, stressed this Thursday that During the Spanish conquest “there were massacres”, in response to the spokesperson of the far-right Vox party in the Cortes of the Spanish region of Aragon, Alejandro Nolascowho assured that the president is “absolutely illiterate and ignorant” when demanding an apology from Spain.

“We are going to send him (Nolasco) the greatness of the Mayan culture, the greatness of the Mexican culture, in many ways. This vision that they came from Europe to civilize that was taught for a long time, even here in Mexico, or this idea of only the meeting of two worlds… No! There were massacres,” said the ruler during her press conference.

Sheinbaum cited statements by Nolasco, published by Spanish mediain which the Vox regional parliamentarian stated that the president has “behaved like an absolute illiterate person, like an absolute ignorant person”, by demanding that Spain apologize to the native peoples for the conquest of Mexico between 1519 and 1521.

The regional legislator also assured that “they will never” “apologize” and “much less for doing things right” in front of “tribes” such as Incas, Aztecs or Mayans who “came from a horrifying culture.”

Regarding Spain, Sheinbaum has been in tune with his predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who sent a letter in March 2019 to the Spanish Crown to demand an apology for the massacres that occurred during that period in history.

Spain’s refusal to offer this apology escalated to the point that Sheinbaum did not invite King Felipe VI to his investiture ceremony last Tuesday, which resulted in no Spanish representative attending the inauguration.

Given this, this Thursday, The Mexican president indicated that they will continue to insist on apologizing to indigenous peoplesas he stated that it is important for the Spanish State to apologize for the atrocities and specified that “that once again exalts the people, the nations.”
