Biden urges a “ceasefire” after Israeli attacks in Lebanon

The president of the United States, Joe Biden called for a ceasefire after another day of Israeli attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanonpart of a prolonged bombing campaign against the strongholds of that Islamist group backed by Iran.

“It’s time for a ceasefire”the president responded to a journalist who asked him if a ground invasion by Israel into Lebanese territory was inevitable.

Israel on Thursday rejected global calls for a ceasefire with the Hezbollah movement and announced that it will continue its attacks, which have caused hundreds of deaths in Lebanon.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 33 people were killed and 195 injured in intense Israeli shelling of Lebanon on Saturday.

“The Israeli aggression against the Lebanese regions caused 33 deaths today and injured 195 people”said that ministry in a statement, on the sixth day of a campaign of Israeli attacks on strongholds of the Islamist group Hezbollah.

In a statement from the White House, Biden stressed his unconditional support for the Israeli attack that caused the death of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, which occurred on Friday in Beirut while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was participating in the General Assembly. of the United Nations in New York.

The American president said that Nasrallah’s death was “a measure of justice for the victimsand supported Israel’s right to defend itself against Iranian-backed groups.

He added that he had ordered Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to further strengthen the positions of US military forces in the Middle East, to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader war.

Ultimately, Biden said, the US intended to de-escalate the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic means.
