Changes at Telemundo: Joaquín Duro will be the new Vice President of Sports

Joaquin Duroa journalist with more than two decades of experience at Univision and Telemundo, networks where he has developed as a media executive, will be in charge of leading Telemundo’s Sports division, the company announced in a statement.

Duro, of Spanish origin but resident in Miami for three decades, will report directly to Luis Fernandezpresident of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. Duro succeeds Eli Velázquez, who will leave the company in the coming days.

Duro’s responsibility for sports will include sports production, programming, acquisitions, operations and multi-platform content. Telemundo has the Spanish-language rights for the United States for the next FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028Duro will be in charge of both coverages, in addition to other events such as NFL Sunday Night Football, U.S. Soccer Federation matches, the Premier League and Chivas de Guadalajara matches in Liga MX.

Duro, who joined Telemundo in 2014, was previously Senior Vice President of AVOD and Digital Streaming for NBCUniversal Telemundo. Before that, he was part of the Sports team, where he led digital coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In the announcement, Luis Fernández highlighted Duro’s experience – winner of three Emmy Awards and eight Cynopsis Media Awards – as a “pioneer in the growth and development of digital sports content in Hispanic media.”

“He is the right person to lead our sports division at a time when sports content is key to future multiplatform growth,” said Fernandez. “Hispanic audiences are increasingly evolving their media consumption habits between linear and streaming platforms”.
