China launched an intercontinental ballistic missile on Wednesday (25.09.2024) equipped with a dummy warhead in the Pacific, an unusual exercise aimed at modernizing its nuclear program that has sparked criticism from its neighbors.

The test, announced by the Ministry of Defense, takes place in a context of rivalry with the United States in the Pacific Oceantension with the Philippines over sovereignty in the South China Sea and open hostility toward Taiwan, a democratically governed island that Beijing claims as its own.

The Defense Ministry, which rarely reports openly on such exercises, did not specify where the missile landed or whether it was fired from land or a submarine.

Intercontinental ballistic missiles are among the most powerful weapons in the world. and are capable of carrying devastating nuclear payloads.

New Zealand was quick to call the shooting “untimely and disturbing.” and warned that he will consult with his allies as more details become known.

From Japan, government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi said there was no advance warning from China. regarding the launch and that the reinforcement of Beijing’s military capabilities and its lack of transparency are a cause for “serious concern.”

In turn, Australia said it had asked China for “explanations”whose military build-up “is taking place without the transparency or guarantees that the region expects from the major powers,” declared a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
