Doctor charged with $32.7 million Medicare fraud

A federal grand jury in Lafayette, Louisiana, filed an indictment against Michael W. Dole, a Louisiana physician, for his role in a scheme to defraud Medicare of more than $32.7 million. by submitting claims for medically unnecessary definitive urine drug testing services.

According to court documents, the 59-year-old doctor owned and operated a pain management clinic in Alexandria that had an in-house drug testing lab.

According to research, From January 2010 through July 2023, Dole allegedly billed Medicare more than $32.7 million for definitive analyses of more than 22 classes of drugs routinely in urine samples from nearly all of their patients, despite a lack of documentation of patient use or suspected use of those drugs.

It is alleged that Medicare subsequently reimbursed Dole more than $11.7 million for claims for urine drug tests that were not medically necessary.and Dole used the proceeds of the fraud on personal expenses.

Dole is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and five counts of health care fraud. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on each count.

According to data from the Health Care Fraud Strike Force Program, since March 2007, it has charged more than 5,400 defendants who together have billed federal health care programs and private insurers more than $27 billion.
