Comments by Republicans led by Donald Trump that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were stealing pets to eat them are allegedly causing problems for them. to the Caribbean people who are simply seeking solidarity in the face of the misfortune of seeing their nation plunged into misery and violence.

According to information released by the city of Springfield, In the last four years, between 12,000 and 15,000 Haitian immigrants have arrived in the small Ohio town, having left their country due to violence and poverty.

These individuals temporarily receive legal assistance under the Immigrant Parole Program, while a response is provided to a request submitted to reside permanently in the United States.

In this regard, during his participation in the debate he held against Kamala Harris, Trump lashed out against these immigrants.

He claimed, without foundation or veracity, that citizens in Springfield were complaining about a group of Haitians dedicated to stealing pets to feed on them.

“Many cities don’t want to talk about it because they are too embarrassed. In Springfield, they are eating their dogs,” he stressed.

Later, although Mike DeWine, the Republican governor of Ohio, dismissed Trump’s statements, an investigation carried out by the television network ABC Newsdetected that fear is beginning to prevail among Haitians that they might be attacked and therefore they are locking themselves in the places where they are staying.

James Fleurijean, a member of the Haitian Community Aid and Support Center, spoke of the tense atmosphere.

“I know that some parents prefer to keep their children at home during this period of time, to see how things are going to go and wait a couple of weeks to see if things calm down or if they get worse. That is why some parents are not even sending their children to school during this week,” she said.

A Haitian quoted anonymously by the television station acknowledged that his compatriots have felt terrified. He can no longer locate several of his companions whom he used to see on the streets.
