Biden says Secret Service 'needs more help' after Trump assassination attempt

US President Joe Biden said on Monday (09/16/2024) that The Secret Service needs more personnel to carry out its tasksfollowing a second assassination attempt against Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump.

“One thing I want to be clear about is that the (Secret) Service needs more help, and I think Congress should be responsive to their needs,” Biden told reporters at the White House after his agents shot and arrested a gunman near Trump’s Florida golf course on Sunday.

The former director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned in July following the shooting of Trump at a campaign rally.

Trump assassination attempt suspect charged with illegal gun possession

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, the suspect in the attempted assassination of Trump, He was charged on Monday with illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with the serial number removed, in his first appearance before a federal judge in the state of Florida. Routh is expected to face additional charges at a later appearance.

On Sunday afternoon, Trump was at his golf club in Florida when “gunshots” were heard nearby, according to his team.
