The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has completed an investigation that resulted in the Seizure of 163 packages of cocaine weighing one kilogram each (360 pounds in total) in the trailer of a vehicle located in the Bronx district of New York.
In the operation, which was reported today and in which three people were arrested, A quantity of drugs was seized with a street value of at least $4.5 million.according to the New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office.
The three men arrested were from New York, Ohio and Arizona who orchestrated a plan to tow the shipment to another vehicle to continue its logistics and supply. They were all arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday.
However, the case, which was jointly worked on by the DEA division in New Jersey and the New York Police Department – among other authorities – began in early April.
Then, as part of an interstate anti-drug operation, DEA agents discovered the three individuals operating out of the Bronx and moving the merchandise in vehicles.
On Friday, August 9, a court authorized the search of the trailer by DEA agents and officers. They discovered 163 kilograms of narcotics packaged in a booby-trapped compartment inside the base of the trailer itself.
$30,000 in cash was also found. A subsequent analysis of the packages by the New York Police Department identified the contents as cocaine.
“This reflects the recent surge in cocaine trafficking into New York City. This is a dangerous and concerning trend, especially as we find drugs like fentanyl and xylazine mixed into the cocaine sold on the streets,” said Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brenan in a statement.
New York Police Department Commissioner Edward A. Caban added that these operations save lives and demonstrate the power that can be achieved by working in a coordinated manner between authorities.
