Peru wins its first Olympic medal in Paris 2024 with Stefano Peschiera in sailing

Peru obtained this Wednesday a bronze medal in Paris 2024thanks to Stefano Peschiera in sailing, in the men’s dinghy modality, which is also the first medal the country has won since 1992.

The sailor managed to maintain the position he obtained in the qualifying round last Monday and, after the competition was postponed for a day on Tuesday due to lack of wind, this Wednesday Peschiera made history by winning Peru its first medal at these Olympic Games and its first in this discipline.

Gold went to Australian Matt Wearn and silver to Cypriot Pavloa Kontides.

Echo in Peru for Stefano Peschiera’s medal

As expected, Peschiera’s achievement caused many positive reactions in Peru, from sports fans to the Chairwoman Dina Boluarte.

“Congratulations, Stefano Peschiera! Your bronze medal in the men’s dinghy sailing discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is A feat that makes our entire country proud. Peru applauds you with a heart full of admiration.”, the Peruvian Presidency indicated on the social network X.

The Executive thanked the 29-year-old Peruvian for having raised the bicolor flag “with such pride.”

For its part, the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD) also reacted to Peschiera’s bronze and defined his feat as “historic” for having positioned Peru on an Olympic podium after 32 years.

“Stefano Peschiera, a sailor from the IPD Paris 2024 Programme, won bronze at the Olympic Games after finishing third in the men’s dinghy category,” the sports organisation celebrated.

The state agency Andina reported that the Peruvian had difficulties in the dinghy final and was in tenth place, but managed to recover to fourth place, and in the final stretch he was able to reach third place overall.

Peschiera competed in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and finished in 31st position; in Tokyo 2020, she climbed to 25th.

With this bronze, Peru adds five medals in its history, The last one was Juan Giha’s silver in shooting in Barcelona 1992.
