What is the Durango prison like?

In March 2014, the Mexican government inaugurated the Federal Penitentiary Complex CPS DURANGO, stating in a statement that it “has cutting-edge equipment for the classification, control and surveillance of inmates, as well as trained personnel for the operation and custody of detainees.”

It was announced that it would have space for 2,500 inmates, as well as social work services, psychology, educational area, workshops, work activities, food service, medical center, hydraulic and sanitary systems and installations, as well as laundry service.

But beyond what is offered in this prison located in the municipality of Gómez Palacio, The facilities are somewhat reminiscent of Nayib Bukele’s controversial prison in El SalvadorThe cells have a bed, sink, bathroom, desk, bench and stainless steel shelf.

In each module there are 24 cells, solitary, Inmates cannot live with the rest of the population and are monitored by more than 50 cameras and 12 watchtowers.

Due to its structure and conditions, the prison was ideal for being the home of people who caused great harm to society, such as kidnappers, It is considered one of the “toughest” prisons, as suicide attempts are frequent there..
