Alyssa Milano, who was Shannen Doherty’s co-star on ‘Charmed’, shared a statement mourning her passing. In her words, she noted that “The world is now a less bright place without her.”
Milano acknowledged past tensions between her and Doherty in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, but described her as “a talented actress” and someone “loved by many.”
“It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but underneath there was someone I deeply respected and admired,” Milano said.
“She was a talented and much loved actress, and the world is less bright without her. My sincere condolences to all who loved her,” he said in his statement.
Her work in ‘Charmed’
Milano played Phoebe on ‘Charmed,’ the younger sister of the three Halliwell witches who possessed powers such as premonition, levitation and magical empathy in later seasons.
The trio, which also included Holly Marie Combs as the time-freezing Piper, were known as the “Charmed Ones,” three witch sisters prophesied to be the ultimate warriors of good against demonic evils.
Milano had a rocky relationship with Doherty, who along with Combs, mentioned on Doherty’s ‘Let’s Be Clear’ podcast that Milano may have been a factor in her firing from ‘Charmed.’
Doherty’s character, Prue, was killed off at the end of season 3 and was later replaced by Rose McGowan as the long-lost half-sister, witch Paige Matthews.
‘Charmed’ meant a lot to Doherty, who has repeatedly expressed her deep love for the show and the pain caused by her dismissal.
“I feel sorry for the fans. But I don’t feel sorry for myself, because I was so incredibly devastated about being fired that, I think, even years, years, years later, if I had walked on that set, it would have just turned everything upside down for me. And it would have crushed me all over again.”he said.
The series began for the first time in 1998 and ended in 2006.
The 53-year-old actress’s death was confirmed by her publicist Leslie Sloane. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after showing signs of improvement.
She said she was “surrounded by her loved ones and her dog Bowie. The family asks for privacy at this time so they can mourn her loss in peace.”
