The government of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused Israel of continuing to “sabotage the peace process” in the Middle East and described as “inadmissible” the July 13 attack on an area of the Gaza Strip considered a “humanitarian zone” that left at least 90 people dead and 300 wounded.
“The Government of Israel continues to sabotage the peace process and the ceasefire in the Middle East. The most recent bombing in the Gaza Strip that killed hundreds of innocent people is inadmissible,” the Brazilian Presidency said in a statement, the text of which was shared on the account of X (formerly known as X). Twitter) of the president.
According to Hamas – considered a terrorist group by the European Union – the bombings killed 92 Palestinians in the Al Mawasi displaced persons camp, near Khan Yunis, and 20 others in the al-Shati camp in Gaza City. Israel announced on Sunday that it had killed a senior Hamas commander in the Khan Yunis area.
“It is appalling that they continue to collectively punish the Palestinian people. “There are already tens of thousands of people dead in consecutive attacks since last year, many in demarcated humanitarian zones that should be protected,” says the official Brazilian statement. “We, political leaders of the democratic world, cannot remain silent in the face of this endless massacre,” added the Brazilian Presidency.
The conflict has strained Israel’s diplomatic relations with several countries, including Brazil. Lula, whose country holds the G20 presidency in 2024, has been one of the strongest voices on the international scene against the Israeli military offensive. His government recalled the ambassador to Israel at the end of May without naming an immediate replacement.
