The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, promised that the Armed Forces will respond to the emergency caused by the first cyclone of the Atlantic season, Storm Alberto, which made landfall this Thursday in northeastern Mexico and has left at least three dead. .

“It is the first cyclone or phenomenon of intense rain in the Gulf (of Mexico), it has rained a lot in the southeast and it is going to enter, it is entering, along the coast of Tamaulipas, and Action is already taking place, the Army is there, the Navy is there, the National Guard is there.“He declared in his morning conference.

After making landfall at 4:30 local time (10:30 GMT) in Ciudad Madero, in the border state of Tamaulipas, the phenomenon moves over Nuevo León and Coahuila, both in the northeast, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN). .

The cyclone has already caused the death of three minors in Nuevo Leónwhere a 15-year-old teenager drowned in the flooding of the La Silla River in Monterrey and two 12-year-old children died from electrocution in the municipality of Allende, which López Obrador described as “misfortunes” that occurred “indirectly.”

The Mexican president asserted that “work is underway,” that his security cabinet addressed the issue in its daily meeting this Thursday and that since Wednesday “they are following up on it.”

The cyclone has sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, gusts of up to 95 kilometers per hour and a movement towards the west at 20 kilometers per hour, according to the SMN.

The most affected states are Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipason the northeastern border of Mexico with the United States, in addition to San Luis Potosí, where there are “punctual torrential” rains, of 150 to 250 millimeters, the forecast indicated.

Faced with the phenomenon, the Government of Nuevo León declared “maximum alert” because the cyclone would leave floods in Monterrey, the second largest city in the country, where public transportation, classes and non-essential work were suspended.
