He Canadian Grand Prix left a bittersweet taste in the Red Bull team that on the one hand saw Max Verstappen return to the path of victory after winning the test in Montreal but on the other hand Sergio “Checo” Pérez He had no luck and ended up retiring for the second race in a row.
The Mexican driver, who this week reached an agreement to renew for two seasons with the energy drink team, had to abandon the race after having recovered ground in the event after starting in 16th place. His retirement, in the lap 53, was due to an imperfection in the car.
After having had a contact with the Frenchman Pierre Gasly at the beginning of the race at the Gilles Villenueve, the Mexican continued without any apparent problems and it was not until more than halfway through the test that he had to enter the pits to try to fix a rear wing problem. He did not return to the track.
The retirement of Sergio “Checo” Pérez in Canada adds to the one he starred in in Monte Carlo a couple of weeks ago at the Monaco Grand Prix after suffering a shocking accident from which he fortunately emerged without any physical consequences despite the impressive destruction of the car.
But obviously not everything was bad for Red Bull since the three-time Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen, was able to regain his dominance by climbing to the top of the podium after finishing in sixth place in the last race in Monaco.
The Dutchman, who started from second place after an atypical classification in which he recorded the same time as George Russell, once again showed his skills to dominate in Montreal and make a difference with respect to the rest of the drivers who had approached him in the classification .
Behind ‘MadMax’, the British Lando Norris (McLaren) crossed the finish line, followed by Russell (Mercedes), who completed the podium. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton surprised by taking fourth place, ahead of Oscar Piastri (McLaren).
The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), achieved sixth position in another of the surprise results in Canada and was followed by the Canadian Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (RB) and the French Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon (both of Alpine) to complete the top 10 places.
